With a week of wet weather forecast and the tracks to the farm still holding water after the cold and wet Easter break, reluctantly the popular Lambing Day event at Brinsbury this weekend (March 29) has had to be cancelled.
All is not lost though as many people have been watching lambs being born via a LambCam set up in the lambing barn, sending pictures direct to their computer screens.
The 350 ewes at the Brinsbury campus of Chichester College are giving birth to a
round 700 lambs over the five-week lambing period.
Watching over the births are the college's farm staff, assisted by male and female agriculture students who are maintaining a 24-hour rota, caring for the animals and obtaining a valuable lesson in ensuring the whole process goes smoothly.
The LambCam has become essential viewing for many of the members of Genes Reunited who report that some of their members have been staying in all day glued to the screen.
One woman was meant to be getting her washing out of the machine but an hour later it was still there. "You've got us hooked" was her comment.
To make up for the cancellation of Lambing Day, the college intends to hold an open day and craft exhibition at Brinsbury in June when, hopefully, the weather will be kinder.
