An anti pesticides campaigner from Chichester has been nominated as one of the year's most inspirational women.
Georgina Downs, 34, is one of nine semi-finalists in the Inspirational Women of the Year awards, organised by the health charity Wellbeing of Women (WoW).
After realising that chemicals sprayed onto nearby fields could be causing her own ill health, Georgina began a personal crusade to lobby Parliament about the issue and she now runs the UK Pesticides Campaign and advises research groups across the country.
On Wednesday (May 14) she will be attending a gala dinner in London to find out the overall winner.
She said: "I feel very honoured to be named a semi finalist. I've worked very hard over the years to get this issue recognised, and it has literally taken over my whole life. My aim is to change Government policy so that there is no spraying near to where people are living or working, or where children attend school near to crop fields."
Liz Campbell, the director of WoW, which carries out research into women's health problems said: "From great-grandmothers to daughters, campaigners to long-term carers, we've heard some amazing stories this year and found it very tough to shortlist the winners. Many of these individuals inspire others to live life to the full – so as the only UK charity dedicated to solving health problems that enable women to get the most out of life, we're delighted help celebrate their achievements."
- For more information about Georgina's campaign see www.pesticidescampaign.co.uk and www.wellbeingofwomen.org.uk for details about WoW.
