A SUPERMARKET giant is looking to increase its foothold in Chichester's retail sector even further than first thought.
Sainsbury's is challenging its grocery rivals Tesco and Waitrose by unveiling ambitious plans for a new 302sq metre extension and an access road for delivery lorries via a new slip lane between the busy Portfield Way/Westhampnett Road and Portfield roundabouts.

The store has already won permission from planners to expand the floor space in the main store by 2,006sq m and its warehouse by 362sq m, although it intends to ditch the warehouse extension plans.

The two-storey extension to its main store will allow the supermarket to stock a 'wider range of goods giving customers more choice'.

The development means drivers will have 56 fewer parking spaces, reducing the total from 674 to 618 because of a new pedestrian route between the shop and BHS and the extension itself.

The latest scheme will see a two-storey, 302sq m extension built at the back of the main supermarket to provide a new 'groceries online' facility.

A new raised loading area and five lorry loading bays are also planned.

The new access road and slip lane to be built just beyond the existing pedestrian crossing in Portfield Way is planned to ease congestion by separating customer traffic from delivery lorries.
