Stranded without Car Insurance

Wouldn’t it be easier if we all went back to bicycles and horse-riding? Sometimes the romantic idea of slinging a saddle across a stallion’s back and going it alone, cowboy-style, seems to be a lot more attractive than the prospect of sitting inside a stuffy, artificial fuel-guzzling beast of a car. Indeed, the o-zone layer would view us very kindly if we were willing to give up the luxury of motor travel.

But given society’s introspective self-assurance that cars are somehow key to efficiency and survival, it seems that, however much the car, and the fuel which runs it, are all on the way out, man will grip onto them both until they finally do disappear. This is nothing to praise, but if we do accept this reality, the least we can do is subtly change the mentality which pervades Western culture, and encourages individuals to consume beyond their needs, to view every purchase as disposable, and to ignore the potential impact these purchases have on neighbouring countries, the suppliers, multi-national workers and the environment itself.

Nevertheless, the least you can do is protect your car in a way which ensures a degree of safety for your driving environment as well as you, the driver, and your finances. Car insurance has never been anybody’s favourite thing to sort out, but it becomes a necessity once you know how it feels to be stranded on the roadside after a breakdown, or footed with an astronomical repair bill following a scrape.

To make the most of a headache-inducing process, then, know what you want and what you should be getting before you start. There are certain offers which are a given for most insurance policies: a hefty no claims discount or no claims bonus should always be up for grabs. Other things to look out for are free breakdown recovery, accident cover and courtesy cars offered whilst your owned car is out of action.

However, just as every driver is different, and even each car varies to an extent, not every car insurance
policy is the same. Companies such as the Co-operative allow you to get an online quote yourself, without having to go through an advisor: so use facilities such as these to suss out your options and make a more informed decision.
