Letter: Congratulations to snow heroes

Whilst the pre-snow arrangements at Heathrow affected thousands of passengers, Gatwick Airport is to be congratulated on maintaining a full service during the worst of the snow. BAA at Heathrow must be green with envy! My colleague, Canon Jonathan Baldwin, Senior Chaplain at Gatwick is also to be praised both for manning a snow plough and for his untiring service to staff and passengers alike during this challenging cold spell.

Again, whilst Metrobus understandably had to make some adjustments to its services, by and large they ran normally. Whereas passengers on Southeastern Railways faced considerable disruption, Southern trains between Crawley and Horsham, and between Crawley, Three Bridges and London faced only minor delays. So warmest congratulations to them, too.

My real quarrel is with the state of some roads whose conditions pre-dates the recent freeze and the current snow.

The surface of Southgate Avenue, one of Crawley’s main arterial roads is quite dreadful, and the surface at the roundabout end of Exchange Road, and the roundabout itself, is full of mini potholes.

Not only should the potential damage to cyclists and motorists be considered, but also thought should be given to the Emergency Services, which often have to take these roads at high speeds. It is our view that regular inspections of all the roads, and especially main roads in the Borough should take place by West Sussex Highways whose responsibility this is.
