CONDUCTOR Barry Wordsworth says that despite the financial constraints, Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra's 85th annual concert season will be as exciting and intriguing as Dome concert-goers have come to expect.
"We have a wonderful roster of brilliant soloists, and some new faces to Brighton alongside musicians for whom you have shown so much enthusiasm in past seasons," he says. "Every concert has some special feature worthy of mention."
The first on O
ctober 4 is an all Russian programme during which Vasko Vassilev will play Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.
The Bulgarian superstar was a student at Moscow Conservatoire and came to London to study at 18, rapidly becoming one of the modern legends of the violin.
The first concert in the new year (January 17) will be devoted to Beethoven.
John Bradbury, the BPO's leader will be the soloist for the Romance, and the Brighton Festival Chorus, plus James Edwards (tenor) and Paul Reeves (bass), will take part in the 9th Symphony (Choral).
Howard Blake's music for The Snowman will be a pre-Christmas attraction. Blake wrote much of his music while living at Cuckfield.
Then in February the symphonic dances from Bernstein's West Side Story will sound another contemporary note.
Three English folk songs by Sussex composer Frank Bridge will be included in the concert for February 14 and probably for the first time at the Dome, the bagpipes will be heard at the final concert on March 21 in An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise by Maxwell Davis, a musical depiction of a boozy and jubilant party on the Isle of Hoy.
The season will end with another musical celebration Tchaikovsky's triumpant 1812 Overture.
