Nostalgia - Crawley town centre in technicolour
THE pictures in this slideshow were supplied by Observer reader Christine Elcombe and show Queens Square and the town centre in the late 60s/early 70s.
While some of us may have seen these pictures before in black and white, these colour versions throw up some interesting points.
For example, the multi-coloured street lights in Queens Square and the bright yellow frontage of the post office.
A few interesting points to note for people who weren’t around all those years ago are the road through Queens Square, the bus stop on the High Street with its two red phone boxes, the huge ‘Electricity’ logo on the side of what is now Evans Cycles, the fountain, the newspapers kiosk where the Pavilion now stands and, of course, the Queens Square clock (which was not the most reliable of time pieces).
Do you recognise anyone in these pictures?
And does anyone know what was going on outside The George? Were all those people waiting for some one or celebrating something – or was that simply the usual lunchtime huddle?
