SLIDESHOW: All the fun of the fete for Metal Box staff
Many old Crawley folk - and those who came from London to help build the new town after the Second World War - speak about the community spirit of the day.
As Manor Royal developed, so did the social side of working life as companies opened clubs for workers and their families and laid on community events – something the Manor Royal team of today is keen to recapture.
These pictures were taken in 1957 at the annual Metal Boc Company Ltd fete at the firm’s premises in Tushmore Lane, Northgate.
The photos come courtesy of West Sussex County Council Library Service (www.westsussexpast.org/pictures) as part of the Roger Bastable collection and were originally loaned by Mrs Daphne A Thompson, whose husband worked for Metal Box.
In the picture of children sitting on the grass enjoying a Punch and Judy show, Mr and Mrs Thompson can be seen standing immediately to left of carousel while their son Clive, then aged 8, is seated just in front of his parents wearing a school cap.
The other pictures show children lining up at the start of a race and Mr Thompson manning a “test your skill with magnet” stall, which he created.
