They were winners – but what exactly had they won?

Have your say

This bunch of young Crawley athletes looked extremely pleased with themselves when this photo was taken, and well they might.

They had just won a shield – but does anyone know which competition they took part in?

The picture was taken c1971 following a competition at the old leisure centre track in Haslett Avenue and shows the children of Langley Green Junior School.

It belongs to Karen Bringes, who can be seen fourth from the left on the front row.

She said: “I am sure we took part in an inter-school athletics meeting and would love to know what we won and where the shield is now.”

Karen was able to name a fair few of her old school mates.

Top row, from left: unknown, Andrew Douglas, Steven Grimes, Winston Dwyer, Mark Bonner, Stephen Jones, John Deacon, Ian Ruby, Michael Smith, unknown, Mark Woodburn, Michael Lowe, unknown, John Rose.

Second row: Karen only knows Teresa Windle and Nick Dutton, who are pictured holding the trophy.

Karen did not know the names of any of the children in the third row as they were in the year below her.

The bottom row, from left: first three are unknown, Karen Bringes, unknown, Jane Boynton, Debbie Easton, Jezel Stocker, Karen Duggan, unknown, Judith Richards, last three unknown.

Are any of these Langley Green Junior School athletes still in Crawley? Can anyone remember what the trophy was for – if it helps, it seems to have the West Sussex County Council logo on the front?
