VILLAGERS joined forces on the bank holiday weekend to celebrate Ardingly's first fete for eight years.

Organisers of the event, Debbie Gordon and Becky West, were up early on Sunday morning to rally a team of supporters in the pouring rain to erect marquees, string out bunting and set up stalls for the day.

With its mixture of arts and crafts stalls, bouncy castle, homemade cakes, coconut shy, tombola and raffles, this was a traditional-style fair with some modern twists, including the addition of an evening disco, recycling post for litter and a stall from Transition Mid Sussex.

Star events were a dog-show and a mini-Olympics where budding track and field stars of tomorrow battled to win medals at stilt-walking, welly-wanging and the potato and spoon race.

The fete was a big hit for the newly-formed Ardingly Village Club which aims to bring villagers together for a range of activities from tennis and walking to amateur dramatics and horticulture.

Proceeds from the day will go towards future club events.
