EXPLOSIVE experts were called to Southgate yesterday after a resident found what he thought was an unexploded bomb.
Cops were called to an address on Southgate Road, on Wednesday afternoon after 2pm when a man reported finding a buried World War Two shell in his garden.

Eye-witness Elsie Clarke, 72, from Malthouse Road, Southgate, said: "Two police cars turne
d up at about 2.30pm and then a CCTV van arrived. I was concerned about the commotion because they were digging about in the garden of the house on the corner (Southgate Road).

"Men in army trousers came in a bomb disposal van. It was quite worrying really, I don't live very far away."

Cops responded quickly and closed the area off for more than two hours while military bomb disposal teams were called in from Aldershot to make the scene safe.

A man, who hasn't been identified, was digging in his garden to put up in a new washing line when he found what he thought was a live bomb.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The caller was concerned after finding a possible world war two shell in his garden. The man had been digging a two foot hole in his garden for a washing line when he came across the metal object.

"A bomb disposal squad were called from Aldershot and came to assess the situation. They found no evidence that this was a bomb shell and it was discovered to be a hollow metal object."
