CRAWLEY's Bank Holiday carnival has been sensationally axed after nearly 50 years because 'not enough people are interested'.
The traditional day out, which featured fire works, a regalia display and fund raising, has been a highlight of the town's social calendar since 1962.

But according to organisers of the annual spectacular – dwindling attendances have meant the carnival simply 'isn't worth it'.

Crawley Lions member and organiser Len Aldridge said: "It has come to the end of its time. People want other things these days. The number of people attending each year has been going down and we just thought it was time to have something else.

"It's something that we have done since 1962 and has been a firm favourite in our annual programme. But in the early days thousands of people would come and now it's down to the hundreds. Obviously we are sad to see it go."

Len said that Lions bosses hoped to replace the event with an alternative, but admitted that no ideas have yet been put together.

Last year the event was shunted into Goffs Park from Southgate, but organisers insisted there was no 'particular event' that led to the axing of the carnival.

Len added: "It's just a gradual decline over the years. And with all the effort that goes into organisation, there's a great deal to do, it wasn't really worth it."

mohamed kalisa, Crawley:

I think that the weather is partially to blame for the low numbers of people that turn up. I remember i moved to crawley about 7 years ago (im 18 years old) , and I've always turned up to the carnival and loved it.
Everyone else I know loves the carnival and people even come from places like Billingshurst just to come!
I could not believe my eyes when I read that it was going to be axed. Without even warning!! Thats is just cruel.
The major factor is the weather and this year.. it would have been fanctastic for it. Its such a shmae and annoying in a way really. I really hope they change their mind and bring it back i mean, what else is there for the younger population?
I hope it comes back. i realy do.

Instead of canceling the annual tradition, in our Town of a Carnival, because of a dwindling attendance, why not find out first, the reason .Then act on the results.I have lived in Crawley`s New town since i was 2, years old.My family & there children love the Carnival, as do i. The local factories would enter there floats ,so why not now encourage shop`s, Schools, restraunts, etc, to do so.Also the original venue, at West Green Playing Fields was central for families,so why change what worked well.it is so disheartening when people give up with out a fight & the town looses out.Carnival`s seem to work well all over the country so come on Lions put up a fight & roar!!!!

I agree with Irene, it seems very defeatest to give up because it is not as popular as it once was instead of doing their best to make it more popular.
Carnivals are all about the fun and a good theme with support from all the local businesses and groups is a great way to help everyone involved. The problem was prices started to go up and up and that is oten an off putting factor for the families the event should attract. Support from the council and maybe a local newspaper and radio station is surely all that is needed...come on people at the observer and mercury time to save our carnival!

Having helped to run a stall at the Carnival for the last 6-7 years the biggest single reason for the low attendance has been the weather. For the last 4 years it has been bad and two years ago the access to the site (then Southgate Playing Fields) was so badly managed that a lot of vehicles became bogged down.

Several stall holders said that they would not come the next year as a result ie. 2007, although it was to be held at Goffs Park . I suspect that change would also have put some off as well (although I think it was a better site) but the thought amongst stall holders of standing in the rain to see almost nobody because of the continuous heavy rain is not really surprising.

This is exactly the sort of thing that makes Crawley a mediocre town, just scrapping a traditional event like this. No-one seems to have any pride in these kind of events any more and if they want to drum up more interest why not market it a bit earlier to promote people's support, instead of just blaming the weather? My four year old son would have loved going but now he and many others will miss out.

I am shocked the Carnival has been scrapped, it is not just cancelled for 2007 but it will be no more! There seems to be general apathy from the Crawley Lions but they need support from the people of crawley to go forward. If they don't see the interest then why should they continue. So we need, the people of Crawley to start a campaign to SAVE OUR CARNIVAL! Maybe if the weather is a problem why don't we move it the August Bank Holiday when you are more likely to guarantee a sunny day. Perhaps it should be moved back to west green playing fields. I remember the good days of the Carnival when there were floats. Perhaps the Crawley Chamber of Commerce could involve the local businesses and support the Lions. I understand the Crawley Lions will be organising something different but why change something when all it needs is boosting with ideas and support from the community. There is enough diverse culture in the town why not involve all communities. Don't give up Crawley fight for something Crawley can be proud of!
