THE TORIES have swept to a landslide victory – boosting their majority to 15 after picking up four more seats.
Labour leader Brenda Smith clung on to her Langley Green seat while Labour's Stephen Joyce lost out to Conservative Sukjit Kaur.

Brenda Burgess also held out against DJ Chris Oxlade as Labour's town hall seats were slashed to a dismal nine.

Conservatives made gains in Ifield, Tilgate, Southgate and Broadfield South. They now have 26 seats in town hall.

Conservative majority - 26
Labour - 9
Lib Dem - 2

10.26am - Labour leader Brenda Smith says she has narrowly held on to her Langley Green seat. Stephen Joyce (Labour) says he has lost his Southgate seat to the Tories.

10.25am - West Green

People are looking edgy around the counting table for West Green.

Labour's oldest serving councillor Bert Crane has held on to his West Green seat

Robert Hull said: "The Conservative vote held up extremely well considering the fact that Conservatives have done absolutely no work in West Green. From what I can tell there is a comfortable Labour majority of maybe 140 to 150. I think in the end that people have turned out to vote for the man that has served them so well for over half a century.

"The West Green turn out is approximately 33 per cent near enough the borough average. The strong majority so far is proof of the good work that's been done in West Green. The voters trust the man that's served them for so long."

10.10am - Three Bridges

Tory Brenda Burgess is feeling the pressure against Labour candidate and DJ Chris Oxlade.

She said: "I'm feeling very anxious as I always do! And this year is particularly tough because I am standing against Chris Oxlade who I have known for years! My husband used to teach him at school and so yes it makes this year a lot more personal."

Chris Oxlade said: "I am finding this very stressful as it's my first time and all! And not too confident at the moment. Elections are very stressful! But yes this is very tough and I hope the national situation doesn't play a part in the local outcome although I can see why people vote based on national events."

Lib Dem Siobhan Hoverd added: "I'm finding everything fine at the moment and just waiting to see what happens. I went to Pound Hill yesterday and there seemed to be a good turn-out of voters. And yes it's just waiting to see really, and it's nice to meet everyone too!"

9.50am - Broadfield North

David Bowen (Conservative) said: "I am feeling quite positive as one can be. Nationally we are doing very very well which is a good reflection of how we may do locally. We just have to keep our fingers crossed. Our hearts are pounding a bit!"

Brian Quinn (Labour) said: "I'm feeling quite good about it. I have been standing for the last 10 years and I have done so much work for Broadfield that I would feel disappointed if I didn't get in again and if I lost my seat. But on the plus side I would get my life back and see my wife more! But I would feel very upset if how we are doing nationally affected my seat locally."

Gossops Green - A doubtful ballot paper is causing delays with the count. Langley Green, Ifield and Pound Hill North have commenced counting.

9.30am - Gossops Green ward expected first

The count for Tory held Gossops Green has begun in earnest.

Being the first ward to start the counting process it indicates that like Bewbush at the last elections it has the lowest voter turnout in Crawley.

Labour candidate Chris Mullins remains tight-lipped about his chances but a spokesperson for his camp said: "He's not biting his fingernails at all. He's a very experienced candidate and he's been through elections before, but yes you could say we are quietly confident."

9.15am - Turnout down on last year

33.8 per cent of Crawley's eligible voters turned out for this year's council elections compared to 36.12 per cent in 2007 and 35.28 per cent in 2006.

9am - Counting begins

Candidates were milling around in eager anticipation this morning as the counting for the Crawley local elections began.

Thirteen tables were set up around the main hall of the K2 sports centre representing each ward.

At 9am this morning counting began with the first results expected to come flooding in at around 9:30am.

Pundits say the party is on course to suffer its worst local election performance in 40 years.

The Tories have already taken a number of big councils, including Southampton and Maidstone.

The final margin is expected to be similar to the drubbing John Major received in 1995 - shortly before the Conservative party was ousted from Government.

In all 13 Crawley councillors will be elected, with the results expected later this morning.

Labour seats at Tilgate, West Green, Southgate, Langley Green, Ifield, Broadfield North and Bewbush all look vulnerable in light of national results.

Excellent coverage of the results. It has been good to read the breakdown. It is a shame to see that turnout was so low. Are the areas which polled high returns bigger or does it suggest that people in those areas are more politically active and turned out?
In the area I live nobody came to talk to me on my doorstep and I notice that there do not seem to have been as many votes cast there.

Outstanding coverage - well done. Does the low turnout show a general lack of faith in politicians no matter what party they are from.

No, NathanMcD of Bewbush, the low turnout does not "show a general lack of faith in politicians"; it shows a dangerous lack of intelligence by non-voters - especially in Bewbush (75.7% did not vote there)

663 votes for the BNP in Ifield?
The CBC website says it was 363.
I do hope its the smaller number that is correct.

I'm not suprised Bewbush was such a low turn out and Pound Hill was so high. The social make-up kind of reflects this. Shame the Tories didn't snatch West Green too. Year by year Labour and returning with fewer seats than the year before. I can see a time when they will just be holding Bewbush and maybe Broadfield North.
