AN ELDERLY man has revealed more secrets about the historical Southgate house that developers want to bulldoze to make way for faceless offices.
Council planners will decide next month if Nightingale House on Brighton Road will be razed to the ground after being a Crawley landmark for more than 100 years.
But Stanley Burr, 96, from Stonefield Close, Southgate, who lived on the same road as the beautiful period building for 40 years, said it would be 'terrible' to knock down part of the town's heritage.
He said: "I feel very sad that the house could be knocked down. But then Crawley has changed so much since the new town development and our history is disappearing.
"Moses Nightingale was so well known in Crawley that whenever he did anything it was reported in the paper.
"He built most of the houses in the High Street and the shops.
"He was even one of the eight bell ringers at the church in the High Street and is buried there now.
"It would be terrible to knock down a house built by and named after such a prominent historical figure in Crawley."
