Maintenance engineer Simon Heavens, 28, was paralysed from the chest down after he slipped by a swimming pool in Cyprus in May 2007.

Two weeks ago the former Hazelwick student finally left hospital, still in a wheelchair, but having regained movement in his arms and hands.

Simon, of Tennyson Close, said: "I think I've been fortunate really.

"Things could have been a lot worse. When I was in hospital all I had to do was look at the beds either side of me. One person might be better off but there is always someone worse off.

"It was a lot of hard work, and there were times that I was at a really low point, you know. Things like sitting are really difficult because I have no trunk muscles.

"All the therapy was hard work but you can either do one of two things. You can embrace it all and do as much as you possibly can or close the door on life."

What fantastic news that Si is now home.

I remember being told about the accident last year - it was terrible.

I am so happy that he has worked so hard and that he has never given up the fight to rebuild his life.

All the staff at the hospital and all family and friends have done Si proud!

Keep up the good work Si.
