Acting the part for school’s new production

Students have been preparing to take to the stage for a four-night run of their latest production.

Following the success of St Wilfrid’s School’s previous production, the musical We Will Rock You!, staff felt it was time to give budding actors a chance to shine.

More than 50 students from Years 7-13 have been involved in the production, which will run from Wednesday February 25 to Saturday February 28.

Director and drama teacher James Hadden said: “This is a fairly new thing for us and a big challenge for the students.

“Not only are there a huge amount of lines for some cast members to learn, it is also a very physical piece with exaggerated and diverse characters and the students are working incredibly hard to get their performances to the standard they need to be.

“In addition to this we decided to have two casts for the first time ever this year which means that we have two very different versions with students bringing their own ideas into their role.”

Brett Van der Merwe, 17, was cast in the demanding role of the Mayor in what was his first acting part.

Brett said: “One of the best things I’ve found is freedom. In some of the scenes where Mr Hadden purposefully doesn’t sort of influence our judgement of what we should do. We get to experiment with what we think could work quite well – and some of the things do succeed and some don’t, then he chips in and says ‘don’t do that’, which is good.”
