Bid to stop drivers parking on verges

Work to stop drivers parking on grass verges with the use of street furniture and fences is under way.

The methods called ‘alternative interventions’ are being piloted by Crawley Borough Council in Crossways Close, Three Bridges, and outside St Francis Of Assisi Catholic Primary School, Southgate.

Cllr Ken Trussell, Cabinet member for the environment, said: “These pilot schemes will allow us to test the effectiveness of the alternative intervention solutions. If successful these measures could then be rolled out to other areas.”

The scheme was welcomed by visitors to the Observer’s Facebook page with some suggesting other locations. Pauline Bennetts said: “Really need to do somethn along Creasys Drive. As soon as it snows everyone parks on the verges and they are just mud baths now. Put some parking bays in so the buses don’t have a problem getting down there.”

Parking bays were also suggested by Carrie-Ann Gregory Sell, who added: “I get as annoyed as anyone when people are parked on the grass verge or by a junction etc but just taking these options away doesn’t solve the problem adequately.”
