Three teenage boys have been arrested following a fire in a block of flats in Horley.

Firefighters and police were called to Elbourne House, a four storey block of flats in Lumley Road at around 6pm last night (Thursday, 27 March).

The fire, which is believed to have started when a roll of carpet was set alight in the stairwell, was extinguished by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jo Clarke, said: “Luckily no one was hurt as a result of this mindless act and I would appeal to anyone who can assist with our investigation to contact us as a matter of urgency with information.”

Reigate and Banstead Neighbourhood Inspector Dan Gutierrez, said: “It was great to see the Horley community pull together following the incident last night and I would like to thanks those, in particular local shops in the area for providing shelter and free refreshments to those affected and the emergency crews attending.”

A 14-year-old boy from Horley and two 15-year-old boys from Smallfield were arrested on suspicion of arson and remain in police custody at this time.

Anyone who can assist detectives with their investigation is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference 45140023993. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.
