Charities benefit from festive appeal

CHARITIES accepted a cheque for more than £2,000 following the annual County Mall Christmas appeal.

The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) received £922, Springboard £697 and Age UK West Sussex £630.

County Mall customers were able to vote for their favourite charity through the shopping centre’s interactive Christmas Tree or online.

Captain Giles Fulford, of 103 Battlian, REME (V), said: “The ABF support all servicemen and families in need of support for injuries and operations and so servicemen in and around Crawley will get the help they need. We complete individual projects, such as changing a house for wheelchair use.

“Although the MoD pays for the bare minimum the ABF is about giving that bit extra.”

Nigel Scott-Dickesson, project manager at Springboard, said: “The donations will be really helpful. It will go towards the activities we run for disabled children in Crawley. It’s important that take the children out on trips, which also gives parents, brothers and sisters a break as they can be the hidden victims of disabilities.”

Caren Lewis, of Age UK West Sussex, said: “We’re delighted to have been part of this appeal. The people of Crawley have shown tremendous support and generosity and we’d like to thank everyone who has supported us.

“With an aging population it’s imperative that adult services continue to be made available. Unfortunately we do face uncertain times and people need our services now more than ever.”
