Council long-service pay scheme axed
A SCHEME which enabled council staff to receive long-service payments if they worked there for more than 10 years will be scrapped on March 31.
Crawley Borough Council cabinet members agreed the recommendation to remove the payments to comply with the Equality Act 2010 after the scheme was deemed discriminatory on January 11.
From April 1 an extra £250 will be added to the Crawley Allowance for all staff and an increase of £250 to basic pay for all staff earning less that £21,000 (full time equivalents) per year.
Conservative Cllr Richard Burrett said: “The proposals have been put forward to provide compensation for staff who have lost as a result of it. We were almost unique by having the scheme.”
Since 1980, the council has provided long-service pay ranging from £188 for those with 10 years under their belts to £1,477 for 30 years’ service.
The council has approximately 300 members of staff who have worked more than 10 years.
A council spokesperson said: “We have been unable to identify any other employers who operate similar schemes and the legal advice we have received is that the scheme is discriminatory and contravenes the Equality Act.”
