Plans to open a Co-op store by merging five units have been submitted.

The application to covert the units in 1 to 5 Kingsland Court, off Three Bridges Road, Three Bridges, was registered with Crawley Borough Council on June 29.

Councillor Bob Burgess (Con, Three Bridges) said: “I’m not certain if we need another retail premises in the area.

“We’ve got a Tesco’s in Pembroke Park, a Lidl just down the road and we’ve got quite a few smaller shops which are doing quite nicely but there’s a potential that a bigger store such as Co-op are thinking of putting in might affect the corner shop type trade.

“I think it’s important that local shopping is available from the smaller people rather than the bigger retailers.”

He said corner shops had a ‘friendlier’ atmosphere than supermarkets.

A cash machine, loading area and car and cycle parking spaces would be created as part of the plans.

Joseph Lipschitz submitted the planning application on behalf of DPDS Consulting Group.

A Co-op was highlighted in one the developer’s drawings.

Units in the first floor of Kingland Court are due to be made into ten apartments. The council gave planning permission to the residential scheme in November 2013.

A planning document stated the ‘likely occupier’ advised it would need up to nine parking spaces. It stated: “The planning consent for the residential scheme requires 11 spaces allocated for the ten apartments at first floor. Based on the current lease agreements, units 6, 7 and 8 are allocated six car parking spaces, with the remaining nine spaces to be allocated for the convenience store.”

The council was expected to determine the application on August 24.
