Youngsters celebrated the official opening of Langley Green Youth Centre’s new home.

The centre, which was based at Lark Rise in Langley Green for more than 50 years, has moved to the old community centre on Stagelands.

The centre, which underwent renovation work, now boasts pool tables, games consoles, computers, table tennis, air hockey and will also provide advice and support to young people.

To celebrate the opening youngsters attended an awards and entertainments evening where they received certificates for their voluntary work and the Mayor, Cllr Keith Blake (Con, Gossops Green), unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Cllr Blake, who is also a West Sussex County Council member, said: “I am thrilled to have been able to attend such a wonderful evening. It is wonderful to be able to recognise the achievements of young people in the area, and wonderful to see them shine. This is a lovely new home for the Langley Green Youth Club and I hope more young people are able to enjoy the services it has to offer.”

The opening comes as the county council try to save £2million from the youth budget. Cllr Brenda Smith, (Lab, Langley Green) said: “We are so pleased that the Langley Green Youth Centre has survived. The council are making cuts to youth services and I am so pleased that it is still here. It has got some really good foundation members and everyone has worked very hard. We want to encourage other young people to come along and get involved. We are also hoping for some outreach work, so people will go out in the evening and if there are young people hanging around with nothing to do, they can bring them into the centre. “It is really positive and we are very lucky to have it here in Langley Green. It is one of the oldest youth centres in town and I am really chuffed that it is up and running.”

The youth centre will open five evenings a week, with nights for the Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Club on Mondays and Young Carers Group on Wednesdays. It is open to ages 13-19 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
