A child who suffered serious head injuries in an accident at Cherry Lane Adventure Playground is “stable and improving” in hospital, said Sussex Police.

Crawley Borough Council, which runs the playgrounds, confirmed the child, 8, was hit on the head by a piece of a wooden pole from the swing on which he was playing.

Paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the playground at around 12.50pm on Tuesday (April 8) before the boy was airlifted to St George’s Hospital, London, suffering a serious head injury.

All four Crawley adventure playgrounds – Cherry Lane in Langley Green, Waterlea in Furnace Green, Millpond in Bewbush and Creasys Drive in Broadfield – are closed while the equipment is inspected.
