Community groups and event organisers have been urged to apply for grants after one of the town’s local committees found itself sitting on more than £3,000 in unclaimed money.

At the West Crawley County Local Committee’s final meeting of the financial year at Crawley Library, £6,945 in Community Initiative Funding was handed out to three projects, leaving £3,723 in the pot.

Crawley Open House received £2,778 to replace the kitchen in the Day Centre; Crawley Amateur Boxing Club received £2,778 for renovations to the changing facilities; and residents at Pembroke Park, Three Bridges, received £1,389 for a street party.

Committee chairman Cllr Alan Quirk said: “We have been invited to give the remaining money to a local food bank. Our feeling is we won’t have another meeting until June but there may be other applications before then. What we would like to do is keep the application window open until then. If none come forward, we will want to consider which food banks in the area will be suitable. Any balance left will go there.”
