A children’s club has maintained its ‘good’ rating following its first Ofsted inspection in more than six years.

The Jeli Children’s Club, in Crawley Down, was visited by Ofsted inspector Rebecca Khabbazi on May 11 and her findings were published on Friday (May 29).

The club holds sessions for youngsters aged 3-11 before and after school at Crawley Down Primary, in Hophurst Lane, during term time.

It is run by Lisa Hughes and Jenni Lomas, who have 30 years’ child care experience between them. It was last inspected in December 2008.

Following the latest inspection, Ms Khabbazi highlighted two areas which she said needed to be addressed if the club was to improve further and perhaps gain an ‘outstanding’ rating.

The first was to encourage more independence among the children during snack and mealtimes.

Her report stated: “Staff do not always encourage children to be as independent as possible at mealtimes.

“For instance, they do not always encourage children to serve themselves or pour their own drinks to support their self-care skills.”

The second was to improve the ways in which feedback was collected from parents.

Those two points aside, the report painted a positive picture of the club and the work carried out by staff to keep the children safe while encouraging their development.

Ms Khabbazi wrote: “Children come into the club happily and quickly choose something to do.

“Staff talk to them as they play and join in with activities.

“Children are keen to share their news with staff, who listen to them attentively and encourage conversations. This supports children’s communication and language development well.”

Her opinion was supported by parents who reported they were “very happy with the range of activities provided and feel that their children are safe and well cared for”.
