Crawley sign trio

CRAWLEY Town have made their first signings of the summer, bringing in former Bournemouth striker Steve Fletcher, former Brighton defender Sam Rents and Forest Green defender Chris Giles.

Fletcher, 25, is an experienced and highly-rated player who has enjoyed a good season at League Two club Chesterfield, making 23 appearances plus 15 from the bench.

Steve Evans has recruited him ahead of some other League Two clubs who were interested in him.

Young left-sided player Sam Rents, 20, joins Reds from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Former Crawley Town defender Chris Giles, 26, returns to Broadfield from Forest Green and was a popular player at Crawley in his first spell during 2005-06.

Manager Evans said: "Each one of these lads will play a big part next season.

"We identified key areas in the team that we had to strengthen and there is no doubt we have done that with these three signings.

"Steve Fletcher is without doubt a magnificent signing. He certainly had more attractive offers financially than ours.

"He was my number one target to get on board and it's great we have got it done. He is a winner and every manager he has played for says that."

"I expect that by early next week we will have added to our squad. With a view to next season the blend of youth, experience and hungry players is taking shape."

"Young Sam Rents is a player I like a lot and he has the ability and attitude to get back into league football. Current Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Michelle Kuipers could not speak highly enough of him and of the performances he gave when he played at Coca-Cola League 1 level."

"Big Chris Giles is a top class defender who was outstanding every time I watched him last season. He defends as if his life depended on it, sticks his head on the ball in both boxes and you cannot ask anymore."
