Crawley council will put on a St George’s Day event in the town centre.

The announcement came days after Crawley St.George’s Day Cultural Parade Society said it was cancelling the event for the second year in a row because of a lack of volunteers.

A council spokesman said: “This year, April 23 falls on a Saturday and the council will be running an event to celebrate the patron saint of England.

“Planning is still at an early stage but the council expects the event to be like a spring fair with an English theme.

“Entertainment could include dancing, music, singing, history, poetry and drama.”

The annual event has been run entirely by volunteers and has become one of the highlights of the town’s social calendar since it was launched in 2012.

Councillor Michael Jones, Cabinet member for Community Engagement, said: “I’m delighted that we are going to celebrate St George’s Day in Crawley with an event for all the family.

“Volunteers are welcome to get involved so if you’d like to play a part in the event please get in touch.”

Crawley St. George’s Day Cultural Parade Society Secretary Richard Miller issued a statement on Thursday (January 7): “After several calls for such volunteers the Society has received only a handful of offers of help and these are not enough to organise a successful and safe Parade and therefore there will be no Parade organised for 2016.”
