Crawley Town wait for Setanta news

CRAWLEY Town are waiting to see what happens to beleaguered TV channel Setanta Sports before they go ahead with two more signings.

They hope to bring in a goalkeeper on loan from a Championship side to provide competition for regular No.1 Simon Rayner.

And manager Steve Evans is also close to signing another striker.

Both these players are being kept a mystery by the club until the board make a decision on whether they can afford them.

Setanta currently provide a key source of revenue to Town, comprising a share in the Conference fees which work out at 70-80,000 per year per club.

And they also benefit from match fees for TV appearances, which last season amounted to 12,000 for one home match and one away.

Setanta are believed to be about to go out of business, following the collapse of their Premier League coverage.

They were unable to meet the deadline for payment of fees to both them and the Scottish Premier League.

Club chairman Vic Marley said: "Setanta haven't reneged upon their agreement with the Conference and we are hopeful they can continue.

"Their coverage of the Blue Square Premier has been successful, often attracting a bigger audience than the Scottish Premier League.

"The Setanta situation has important implication for all clubs in the Blue Square Premier and we have partly based our budget upon the expectation the money will be coming in.

"We have already cut our budget from last year and may do again."

Assistant manager Paul Raynor said: "We are guided by the board as to whether we can sign an extra 'keeper and a striker and we must wait and see."
