A man was left bleeding in a car after a ‘hammer attack’ robbery.
Emergency services were called to the scene in The Haven Centre car park, Hophurst Lane, Crawley Down, shortly before 4pm on Tuesday (June 16).
The man, 30, from East Grinstead, was taken to East Surrey Hospital with head injuries and broken ribs. His mobile phone and car keys had been stolen.
Loraine Otway, manager of The Haven Centre, called for police and an ambulance.
She said: “I just saw a man was in trouble.
“The man was sitting in his car.
“He was bleeding a lot.
“A colleague gave first aid to the man.”
She added: “We believe he hadn’t used the centre.
“Needless to say we are extremely sorry.”
A spokesman for Sussex Police said a fight had taken place in the car park.
Officers believed his injuries were caused by a hammer.
The man was kept in hospital overnight but his condition was not assessed as life threatening.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of robbery.
The spokesman said: “Shortly afterwards police arrested an 18-year old man from Copthorne Common and a 22-year old Crawley man, at their addresses, on suspicion of robbery. They are currently in custody for interview and further enquiries. “The investigation is at an early stage and the full circumstances are not yet clear, but it is believed that the people involved were known to each other.”
