Police have appealed for information after a gun was found in a wooded area in Crawley.
A police spokesman said a member of the public founded the handgun near Lundy Close, Broadfield, recently.
The Automatic Victoria, a magazine and five live bullets were found wrapped in a couple of bin bags.
The spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police do not know how the weapon came to be there. It may have been dropped by someone, or hidden and disturbed by wildlife.
“Forensic tests will be carried out on the weapon to try to establish it’s ownership and to help determine whether it has been used in any criminality.
“Anyone who has any information about where the gun came from, or who has seen suspicious activity in that area recently, is asked to contact Sussex Police on email@example.com or call 101, quoting serial 1124 of 14/08. You can also call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
