A nursery has missed out on top ratings by the narrowest of margins following an Ofsted inspection.

St Margaret’s Nursery, in The Mardens, Ifield, was visited by inspector Jill Steer on May 21 and her findings were published on Friday (June 12).

Ms Steer’s report gave the nursery a ‘good’ rating and praised the work carried out by staff to encourage children’s independence and development as they prepared for the move to primary school.

The only area which was highlighted for further improvement was the home time routine.

The report stated: “At home time, parents collect their children from the main entrance area so they do not see them engaged in activities and find out first hand what they have been learning.

“Children are unable to proudly show their parents what they have been doing so they can share their experiences and extend the learning at home.”

This point aside, the report highlighted several areas which had earned the nursery its ‘good’ rating.

Describing some of the outdoor activities she had observed, Ms Steer praised the way staff helped children to form letters in chalk on the ground before transferring thise fledgling skills to using pencils and pens on paper and clipboards.

She added: “Staff know when to join in and when to observe.”

The inspection was the nursery’s first since 2009.
