Willow weaving, bushcraft and enjoying the dawn chorus will be on the agenda when Buchan Country Park, Crawley, celebrates the return of spring.

A range of family activities have been arranged for the Easter holidays and beyond.

Some of the highlights include:

• Willow Weaving: Saturday April 4 from 10am-2.30pm.

You’ll be able to get creative and learn how to twist willow into small sculptures, such as a dragonfly, flower or even a snail. You’ll be able to take your creations home for your garden or to give as a gift. All materials are supplied.

Tickets cost £15 per person and places are limited, so book now to avoid disappointment.

• Family Bushcraft: Wednesday April 8 from 10am-4pm.

You’ll be able to enjoy a family day out in the woods at the country park. Among the many activities, the rangers will show you how to build a den, light a campfire without matches, weave animals from willow sticks and make charcoal. You’ll be able to enjoy lunch cooked over an open fire. You will get dirty so please dress appropriately and be prepared for wet weather, just in case there are any April showers. All tools and materials are provided, as is lunch.

Tickets cost £15 per person or a family ticket for four people is £45. Please book in advance.

• International Dawn Chorus Day: Sunday May 3 from 4.30am-7.30am.

An early start will be rewarded with the rising sun and bird song at Buchan Country Park. As part of International Dawn Chorus Day, a worldwide celebration, you’ll enjoy a two mile walk with nature’s soundtrack before tucking into a continental breakfast at the Countryside Centre. Breakfast is included.

Tickets cost £7 per person and proceeds will be donated to St Peter and St James Hospice in North Chailey.

David Barling, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Residents Services, said: “The rangers have been busy planning lots of wonderful activities for us to enjoy this spring, from learning new skills to seeing some of our countryside in a different way.

“Buchan Country Park is absolutely beautiful at this time of year – and I’m sure the dawn walk will be spectacular.”
