Sussex Police said a garage in Meadowlands, West Green, was broken into at a similar time and fishing equipment was stolen.

Two boys, aged 16 and 17, and a 19-year-old man, all from Crawley, were arrested that night and questioned on suspicion of breaking into the garages.

They were released on bail until January 16.

PC Richard Hemmings said: “We would like to speak to anyone whose garages may have been interfered with or broken into in the area but who has not contacted us.

“They may have information that could help with our investigation.”

Sussex Police said a resident chased an intruder from his home in St Peter’s Road, West Green, at 12.20am on Saturday, and later found his wife’s handbag had been stolen.

A 24-year-old man from Crawley was arrested on suspicion of burglary that evening and was questioned before being released on bail until February 8.

The missing handbag has since been recovered by officers doing house to house inquiries in the area.

Detective Sergeant Jonathan Pink said: “We’re keen to speak to anyone who was in the West Green area late on Friday night or early on Saturday morning and saw anyone acting suspiciously.

“I would ask the public to be vigilant, to ensure that doors and windows of their homes are properly secured at night and that suspicious people are promptly reported to us.”
