Frozen food giant Iceland has submitted a planning application to open a store in Crawley town centre.

The application for Haslett Avenue West was submitted to Crawley Borough Council on January 19 and would see the merging of two empty units.

The news was welcomed by Cllr Peter Smith, Cabinet member for planning and economic development.

He said: “It’s pleasing to see Iceland’s application to return to the town centre with a large new store, adding to its two other shops in Broadfield and Three Bridges.

“This proposed new store shows the company’s belief in the strong economy in Crawley, while it will add to the range of quality and great value options for shoppers.”

A decision on the application is scheduled to be reached by March 16.

Iceland has two other branches in Crawley – one in Three Bridges and one in Broadfield.

A spokesman for the company said it would not be issuing a statement about when the store was open or how many jobs it would create until it was certain the plan was going ahead.
