LETTER: Beyond the call of duty

I thought my good experience should be recorded.

During January and February 2016 I spent five weeks in East Surrey hospital in two different wards, and found the care extremely good.

Nothing was too much trouble for the nursing and ancillary staff, often going beyond the call of duty, even when, on occasions, being abused by the patient they were attending to.

Doctors did not stand at the end of the bed and talk down at you, they came alongside the bed, got down to your level and discussed your ailment and treatment with you.

In one bay of six patients I was in, four needed to be washed and fed, only two were able to look after themselves, I did not see anyone go without food, it sometimes took as long as 30 minutes to feed a patient if the patient was being particularly awkward.

Depending on priority my needs were attended to in reasonable time, the wards I was in were clean and tidy, the selection of food was varied, all tastes were catered for, and the food was usually warm, the vegetable soup, made on site, was always tasty and hot.

In my experience things have greatly improved over the past 10 years or so.
