LETTER: Queen's Stones need a clean

I just had to write and say how great the celebrations were for the Queen's Birthday as in lighting the beacon in Tilgate Park. Thank you to those who organised and worked so hard to make it a success.

However, I was a little disappointed that we did not appear to make an effort to clean and tidy the area where the Queen’s ‘stones’ are – next to Wilko’s. It is the 10th anniversary of this monument. If the Queen were to visit Crawley, we would be ashamed to show her the disgusting condition of the art work. I am sure our amenity services, who do a great job across the town, are going to replant the area, as the gap between the hedge and the stones is practically bare. (Perhaps some small hardy rose bushes could be included?)

Street art needs to enhance the area in which it is exhibited. I appreciate that the Maidenbower artwork is to be refurbished. Excellent. Now it’s time to refurbish the other art works of the town including the Queen’s Stones.

Indeed a councillor has been photographed in his own ward posing for ‘Clean for the Queen’ but has anything been done?

The stones could have been cleaned for her birthday.

Perhaps there could be a community project around June, in time for the Queen’s official birthday, so that the stones could be cleansed and polished to show our appreciation of her longevity and service.
