LETTER: Shame of roadsides

Following the decision by John O'Brien to foist the cost of WSCC Highway Rangers on to any parish councils willing to subsidise his responsibilities, I feel his logic could rebound.

He states that there were no Highway Rangers before they were introduced. I believe the same is true of WSCC cabinet members for highways and transport and we would only pay for their continued existence if they preferred improving highways and transport. His argument is that cleaning road signs and enabling signs to be seen after removing vegetation is merely aesthetics. Three Bridges Forum invited him to address our concerns over anti social parking soon after his appointment. His woeful lack of drive to make any improvements should have taught us to expect this further preference to save higher rate taxpayers any increased community burden to improve the environment for everyone.Any of us returning from driving on the continent or even some neighbouring counties who feel shame at the litter, potholes, and tattiness of our county roadsides now know at least one person who is responsible. If only someone could afford to send Mr O’Brien on a driving trip to France it would be good to hear his excuses about how rich the French local authorities are and how broke West Sussex needs to be. Even members of his own Tory party say publicly how wrong he is and also rightly campaign to keep their interest in running a good fire and rescue service...which will be used to rescue motorists crashing as a result of poor roadside visibility.
