£44,000 boost to promote Chichester's attractions and hot-spots

The Chichester district's tourism industry received a cash boost when the district council handed over a £44,000 cheque to Antony Wallace, chairman of Visit Chichester.

The money will be used to promote the district's coastal, countryside and city attractions and to increase the number of visitors to the area.

Cllr Nick Thomas, portfolio holder for culture and sport, said families were feeling the impact of the recession and looking to spend their holidays in the UK this year.

"So now is a good time to promote the district in order to attract visitors and help the local economy. By working in partnership with Visit Chichester, we are ensuring that all sectors of the tourist industry have a say on how the money is spent," he added.

Visit Chichester represents a wide range of tourism businesses from caravan sites, bed and breakfast owners and hoteliers to the Goodwood Estate. It also includes members from the tourism partnerships in Midhurst, Selsey, Petworth and the Witterings.

Mr Wallace, who is also chairman of the Hoteliers' Association, said he was delighted the council was working in partnership with Visit Chichester.

"With the Met Office's prediction of a long, hot summer, we will invest the 44,000 in a range of marketing activities to promote the wealth of attractions our district has to offer," he added.

"The tourism industry contributes 375m to the district's economy and employs over 8,000 people. By increasing visitor numbers to the district we hope to attract more business for local shops, restaurants, hotels and leisure centres."
