£18m parade work finished
Work to improve 11 of the town’s neighbourhood parades has been completed by Crawley Borough Council.
The project, which cost £18m, has brought life back to the tired looking Crawley Borough Council owned neighbourhood shopping parades.
Makeovers took place at Bewbush, Furnace Green, Gossops Green, Ifield, Langley Green, Northgate, Pound Hill parade, Southgate, Three Bridges (Gales Drive), Tilgate and West Green.
Of the £18m, £15m was spent on Bewbush and Langley Green, while £3m was spent on the other nine parades.
Some £400,000 of work finished in Tilgate last month and included repaving, new street furniture including seating, a new toilet and the removal of a wall between the parade and car park at the eastern end.
Council leader Cllr Bob Lanzer (Con, Pound Hill South and Worth), said: “Crawley’s neighbourhood parades are an important characteristic of the town. Our aim was to make sure they continue to be by modernising them and ensuring they are attractive and fit for purpose.I’m really pleased with the work we’ve done and I think it’s made a big difference to the look and feel of the parades.
“As well as creating a nicer environment for local people, I really hope it has encouraged trade for retailers too.”
The council also found residents wanted parades to be more accessible as well as cleaner, more attractive and safer.
The feedback was taken on board and many parades now have CCTV, lighting improvements, planting and painting, the council spokesman said.
Cllr Lanzer added: “All our parades have benefited from an investment that puts them at the heart of their neighbourhood, encouraging communities and businesses alike.”
