A new chapter in uniform for World Book Day

Schoolchildren enjoyed the strangest of non-uniform days when they dressed as their favourite fictional characters for World Book Day.
Observer photographer Jon Rigby snapped these photos at schools all across town - and they certainly show that there are some healthy imaginations out there.
The pictures were taken at Northgate Primary; Waterfield Primary, in Bewbush; The Brook School, in Maidenbower; Gossops Green Primary; and St Andrew’s School, in Furnace Green.
Staff at St Andrew’s got into the swing of things, holding an assembley hosted by Little Red Riding Hood and the Demon Headmistress – otherwise known as headteacher Elizabeth Dickenson and her deputy Melanie O’Kane.
Mrs O’Kane said: “We got some very funny looks from people, particularly when the staff made their way across the car park to go home!
“The day was really well supported and loads of fun was had.”
The main aim of World Book Day - now in its 16th year - is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.
