A23 roadworks get more speed checks
TWO additional speed cameras have been installed along the stretch of the A23 at Hanscross where widening roadworks are taking place.
The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership says the action is in “direct response to poor driver behaviour” along the 40mph stretch of road.
Phil Henty, Operations Manager at the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, said: “The 40mph speed limit starts ahead of the coned off lanes, which is in accordance with national standards.
“The previous starting location for the average speed cameras was after the lane closure taper, which reduces the carriageway to two lanes.
“It was clear that many drivers were ignoring the 40mph speed limit and were only reducing their speeds to 40mph where the cameras were located.
“At the narrowing of the lanes into the coned area, there is a potential risk of conflict as vehicles merge. Poor speed limit compliance by some drivers increases this risk to unacceptable levels.
“The decision has been taken to install additional average speed cameras to mitigate this risk.
“It is unfortunate that we have had to take such measures, but the decision has been based upon road safety grounds, because disappointingly, a number of drivers have shown that they could not be relied upon to modify their behaviour voluntarily.”
Following installation, the speed camera system has been undergoing a period of testing. This period is now drawing to a close and motorists can expect the system to be live within the next few days.
The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership website – www.SussexSaferRoads.gov.uk – contains a map showing all the speed cameras across Sussex, including those on the A23.
