Accident on the M23 - updated
THERE were huge tailbacks this morning after a rush hour smash on the M23 wreaked havoc this morning (Thursday).
One man was hospitalised after a motorbike collided with a lorry and ploughed in to the central reservation.
The crash happened just before 7.40am on the northbound carriageway between J11 (Pease Pottage) and J10 (Crawley).
Delays built up past Handcross Hill on the A23 as drivers stopped at the scene to help injured commuters.
Emergency services attended the scene and all lanes are now open.
One motorist said: "It's at a standstill around Pease Pottage. No one's going anywhere. The tailbacks are back at Handcross Hill now. It's very slow moving traffic."
A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "On the M23 Northbound carriageway near junction 11 at 7.30 this morning crews attended an accident between a lorry and a motorbike. A man in his 30s was long-boarded and taken to East Surrey hospital."
A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: "Crawley fire sent three appliances to the road traffic accident on the M23 this morning following reports that one man was trapped.
"The accident involved a lorry and a motorbike and we believe one person was hospitalised. Fire fighters remained on the scene for some time clearing debris and making the road safe."
