Three of Crawley’s adventure playgrounds have re-opened one month after a child was seriously hurt at Cherry Lane.
Cherry Lane, Millpond and Waterlea Adventure Playgrounds will re-open for free play this afternoon (May 13), while the playground at Creasys Drive is expected to open at the end of the week.
An eight-year-old boy was taken to St George’s Hospital, London, receiving head injuries at Cherry Lane on April 8.
At a meeting of the full council on April 23, the council was told the child had since been moved out of intensive care and was showing signs of improvement.
A spokesman for Crawley Borough Council said: “Access to free play across all four playgrounds was immediately closed while Crawley Council undertook an extensive condition survey of all wooden play equipment; this included testing timbers and ground conditions.
“All similarly constructed equipment to that which failed has been removed and at least two items in each playground has either been removed or is not in use. The council is looking to replace these pieces at the earliest opportunity.
“The police have completed their investigation and the council continues to work with the Health and Safety Executive while they continue theirs.”
