Alcohol misuse fears

A SHORTAGE of facilities for coping with worsening problems of alcohol misuse in West Sussex was highlighted at a meeting of the joint health overview and scrutiny committee in Chichester.

County councillor James Walsh said the paucity of services was a real health worry.

"What is planned for resources in these, from the abuser right through to de-toxing facilities?"

Richard Ford, of the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust - which is responsible for mental health, learning disability and substance misuse services - said alcohol misuse was one of the biggest health issues faced by society.

There had been some modest increases in investment, but he admitted that in terms of de-tox services, provision in Sussex was 'patchy'.

Alcohol was now responsible for some 40,000 deaths a year across the whole country.
