An armed robber threatened a member of staff at a town centre betting shop yesterday (Wednesday February 27) before making off with several hundred pounds.

The robbery took place at Ladbrokes, in The Broadwalk, Crawley, at around 7.45pm.

Police said the man walked into the betting shop and pulled out what appeared to be a small gun from a green Co-op plastic bag.

He threatened a male member of staff before making off on foot in the direction of the Boulevard.

The suspect is described as black, 6 feet tall, of medium build and was wearing a black hat, a hooded jacket, dark trousers and had a black scarf covering the lower part of his face.

There were no customers on the premises at the time of the incident.

Officers are looking into the possibilty that the robbery may be linked to another which was carried out at the William Hill betting shop, in The Boulevard, on February 19.

Detecticve Inspector Mark Cullimore from West Sussex CID said: “Fortunately the member of staff was not physically injured but nonetheless it was a frightening incident.

“Following the 999 call, officers, including a firearms unit, were immediately deployed to search the area but the suspect was not located.

“I would urge anyone with information that could help police with their enquiries to please come forward. You can call 101 quoting serial 1387 of 27/2 or alternatively leave an anonymous message with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
