Did you know that Sir Patrick Moore (CBE, FRS, FRAS) went to school in Crawley?

The prominent astronomer, researcher, television presenter and radio commentator attended Hill Place School, near Goffs Manor,

The prep school, which has since been converted into two flats, was on the corner of Goffs Park Road and Horsham Road in 1935.

This school photograph shows a tall 12-year-old Patrick Moore, standing fourth from the right in the back row.

A fellow pupil at the school, Michael Longley, now 83, submitted this photo.

Michael is fourth from the right at the front in the photo. He was six-years-old and living at Malthouse farm house in Brewer Road, Southgate.

Michael has written many books about the area he grew up in and in researching one book in 2008, he wrote a letter to Sir Patrick Moore in 2008 to confirm this photo is him.

He said: “He called me back and said that it was him. He didn’t say much else as I’m sure he was a very busy man.”
