Band marks 110 years of music
ONE of the oldest bands in the county is celebrating its 110th birthday.
The Copthorne Silver Band was formed in 1902 after a trio of benefactors bought a set of brass instruments for the villagers.
One of the benefactors, Mr Gladman, moved to the village from Chichester and took up employment as a gardener. Along with the help of local builder Mr Vigor and the band’s first president Mr John Cleese, the trio bought £300 worth of instruments.
The band then started its rehearsals in the village school.
Since that day the band has played frequently, only stopping for periods during the First and Second World War.
To celebrate the anniversary the band held a concert at St John’s Parish Church in Copthorne on Sunday (September 9).
Shelia Feasey, band secretary, said: “The event was a great success. There was a good audience of about 90 people enjoying a range of music, including a sing-a-long to Cym Rhonda.
“St John’s Church were wonderful hosts, supplying church members to serve tea and cakes during the break. All cakes were made and donated by parishioners. Along with donations for refreshments and a charity draw, in excess of £275 was raised for St Catherine’s Hospice.
“The afternoon culminated with a BBQ for band members, relatives and friends.
“Band members come from all walks of life and localities but with a common purpose to enjoy their music and support the community.
“They regularly take part in the Copthorne Scout and Guide Gang show and provide entertainment at village fetes and carnivals and bandstands, and carolling in the wider community.”
The band will make their next public performance at The Ifield Barn Theatre on Sunday October 14 at 3pm.
Tickets can be purchased from the box office on 01293 525030.
The band currently practices at the Delmer Morgan Centre.
