Boulevard could be site for ‘anchor’ store
Town Centre North developers are looking at The Boulevard as a potential site for the regeneration scheme’s ‘anchor’ store.
John Lewis has indicated an interest in becoming the regeneration project’s flagship department store but so far a suitable site has not been found.
The project is a £558m investment to revamp the northern part of Crawley town centre. Around £200m has been set aside to redevelop The Boulevard.
Now Stanhope, which has been selected by the council to develop the second phase of the project, has turned its attention to The Boulevard which Cllr Claire Denman (Con, Pound Hill South and Worth) says could be a potential site for a big name department store. But she said it was too early to say where on The Boulevard that store could go and if it would be John Lewis. She also said it was possible an anchor store could go elsewhere and another big name department store homed on The Boulevard.
Cllr Denman, Crawley Borough Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development, said: “What we are looking at is an anchor store along The Boulevard, we know John Lewis want to come to Crawley but its requirements are very tight and so we have to make sure we find the right location. For example they need a big car park, and we need to make sure that all fits together in The Boulevard. We need to do a retail compliance study to make sure there is enough space in the area.
“John Lewis have once again reaffirmed its commitment to Crawley and we are trying to find the right site for them.
“At the moment we are looking at a huge strip from the High Street to the top of The Boulevard for an anchor store and we think somewhere along there could be a good site for a department store. But all of this is very premature and it is very early days and at the moment it is very open. It is a bit early to place them at that site or any site like the post office. The Boulevard could be a good site for any big department store or big name.
“We need something to drive people to come Crawley and we need to make sure we have a credible site.”
