Brave James’ fundraising legacy
A COURAGEOUS young man who completed an epic football challenge just weeks before he died raised £6,930 for the cancer hospital where he was treated.
James Aldis, 26, passed away at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea on September 12 last year, a week before his 26th birthday.
He completed around 2,350 miles visiting 92 football stadiums in 92 hours along with his brother Dave Aldis and friends Dave and Ray Bulled last August.
Dad Neil Aldis said: “We are very proud of this achievement by James and his team, and of all the support he was given by relatives, friends and your goodselves at the Crawley Observer. “James target was only £2,000 and we surpassed that by a long way and I am sure he would have been very proud of the achievement.”
James of Lyndhurst Close, Southgate, had been treated for Hodgkins Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and had two bone marrow transplants at the specialist cancer hospital before dying of organ failure.
Amanda Heaton, community fundraising manager at The Royal Marsden said: “James was a remarkable young man, and an inspiration to us all.
“I remember talking to him about his fundraising activity of visiting 92 football league clubs in 92 hours when he popped in to the fundraising office in Sutton and thinking what an amazing thing it was to do.
“His family must be so proud of his tremendous achievement in raising such a magnificent sum for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and, in particular, the Bud Flanagan Ward and the Oak Centre for Children and Young People.”
The money raised will go towards pioneering projects at The Royal Marsden which will provide world-class treatment and care for cancer patients.
It will also support its groundbreaking work in cancer research.
