BREAKING: Crawley councillor who defected from Conservative Party to UKIP resigns

Have your say

A Crawley councillor who defected from the Conservative Party to UKIP has resigned because he has “become increasingly busy”.

A spokesman for Crawley Borough Council confirmed Karl Williamson is leaving his Southgate seat.

Mr Williamson said: “It is with regret to announce that I will be resigning from my position as councillor for Southgate with immediate effect.

“I have tendered my resignation to the Head of Legal & Democratic Services at the town hall.

“Lately, my full time work schedule has become increasingly busy, which has resulted in me spending a lot of time out of the country.

“Southgate deserves a councillor who can commit a large percentage of their time to the town, and I am no longer in a position to do that.”

The spokesman said: “An election to fill the vacancy will be held within 35 days after notice in writing has been given to Ann-Maria Brown, Head of Legal and Democratic Services at the address below by two local government electors for the principal area requesting that an election be held.”
